Merry-Go-Rounds and Pictures

31 May

So I already described my day as a merry-go-round of 60 12-passenger vans & trucks from Jonesville, VA to Johnson City, TN for load-up day on facebook, but sometimes I think I’m funny in my head and like to reuse phrasing… so I apologize if it’s not actually funny.

On a more detailed note, we took today to drive the hour to the warehouse at the ASP office and drive all of our center vehicles through a load-up line that would have made Henry Ford proud (again, another stolen phrase.  I’m a magpie.)  It was really the first time we left the few-mile radius around the Porch in the past two weeks, so it was beautiful to drive through the mountain highways this morning in the fog.  I’m excited to do the same again tomorrow when I drive Master Gidget (a former electrician’s van, which still has the logos and friendly cartoon of your local Ohioan on the sides) to Barbourville in the afternoon.

We also got to witness the talent show tonight, which included guitar songs about Dracula (quite impressive), guitar songs about Appalachia (in all honesty, this song probably summed up my feelings about Appalachia sometimes.  I hope I get the lyrics to post!) and renditions of the Von Trapp family’s bedtime song, fitted appropriately for life on the Porch.  Pictures are on the facebook page linked to in the last post, and I’ve started a facebook picture album as well.  It’s a bit thin at the moment :/

It’s insane how slow the first couple of days went, how horrible the couple of days when I was sick were, and how quickly the rest of training until now went.  I love so many of the people here and not only am excited to go start setting up our center tomorrow night (and doing laundry!) but to see them again in a few weeks at the Breaks and at the end of the summer.  This is truly the best place I could be this summer.

A shout out to my grandmas, who both called me today out of the blue!  Calls and *things* from loved ones are more appreciated than you know!  (PO Box in KY to be posted as soon as I get it!)

Peace!
