Mountains Beyond Mountains (and the awesomeness of Dr Paul Farmer)

31 Mar

I actually finished Tracy Kidder’s book (Mountains Beyond Mountains: Healing the World) about Dr. Paul Farmer several weeks ago, but my love for it has continued to have been expressed in my constant pressuring of my roommates to read it.  If you’ve given up on believing in the good that comes from community partnerships or the ability to provide quality health care to the poor, then this is a rejuvenating read.  It’s not all warm and fuzzy – Farmer doesn’t sugar coat his views of the developed world’s health care priorities – but it’s illuminating nonetheless.

Apparently President Obama hasn’t been blind to the success of Farmer’s brainchild – the organization Partners in Health – because he’s recently nominated the doctor’s partner, Mr Jim Kim, to head the World Bank.  He’s not the traditional pick, but he definitely believes in the O for the P: always choosing the Option for the Poor.
